Title: Alfredda Charlotte Delaney

Abstract: Alfredda Charlotte Delaney, retired Knoxville City School teacher, was active in many civic affairs. Her major involvements were with the Mechanicsville Citizens for a Better Community, Solutions to Issues of Concern to Knoxvillians (SICK), the Mayor's Task Force for Revitalization of Mechanicsville, and the Knoxville Beautification Board. A native of Knoxville, Miss Delaney earned her bachelor's degree at Knoxville College and did graduate work at TSU, Columbia University and The University of Tennessee. Among the many honors she has received are the Mayor's Certificate of Appreciation for community service (1979), honorary membership in the TN House of Representatives (1984), the Golden Apple Award for Teachers (1986), and thhe Presidential Citation from the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (1986). Throughout her distinquished career, Ms. Delaney has been a community activist, and champition of equal opportunity in public and higher education.

Title: The Knoxville Colored Orphanage and Board of Directors

Abstract: 2 tifs. Two photographs of the Knoxville Colored Orphanage and their board of directors. In the first photograph, the six member board of directors stands in front of a home, with James and Ethel Beck standing at either end of the group. The second image is a damaged photograph of a person interacting with animals, while a woman looks on outside a fence. It was taken of the farm at the orphanage. The children at the Knoxville Colored Orphanage attended public school and worked on-site at the orphanage. James and Ethel Beck were two of the most influential members of Knoxville's black community beginning in the 1920's. They helped to establish the Knoxville Colored Orphanage in 1919, and the project took off when Ethel was elected to head the board. In 1941 the school was re-named the Ethel Beck Home for Children in her honor, but closed in the early fifties.

Abstract: The five men in this picture who stand in front of Knoxville's Carnegie Library were prominent citizens in the black community. They are identified on the back of the photograph as: Jim Beck, postal clerk; Dr. Henry M. Green; Webster Porter, editor of the East Tennessee News; Joshua Cobb, teacher; and John Hoff, lawyer. The back of the photograph also notes that the Carnegie Library served Knoxville's black community from 1917 until the early 1960s.

Abstract: Verso said reads: "Fred Logan, For over 50 years, Mr. Logan owned various night clubs in Knoxville and promoted shows featuring some of the biggest personalities in show business." These personalities included such artists as Ella Fitzgerald and Fats Domino. Fred Logan opened his first club on Gay Street in the late 1930s.

Abstract: The pupils in this class picture range from all ages, approximately five to twelve years of age. The picture was taken on the steps of the Carnegie Library on Vine Avenue. Green School was one of the earlier schools established in Knoxville, Tennessee for the education of African American children in 1909.

Written on the reverse side,"Cruising to the 1910 Appalachian Exposition at Chilhowee park. Young lady with parasol is Mrs. Bessie Richards. The young girl in the center is Mrs. Margaret Singleton Carson."

Abstract: This photograph is titled, "Reverend James H. Robinson". Reverend Robinson was born in "The Bottoms" in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1907. He became a successful minister and leader, writing several books and organizing "Operation Crossroads Africa" which took students to Africa to help construct buildings and roads in African communities.

Abstract: These two photographs, one drawing, and one business card all relate to Cal Johnson. Mr Johnson was born a slave in 1844 and eventually became very succesful financially. He made money in real estate, saloon ownership, and owning race horses. He donated money to build a fountain in a city park that Knoxville hand named in his honor in 1922.

She attended Knoxville College from her grade school education through her baccalaureate study. She earned two undergraduate degrees from Knoxville College in Foreign Language and Music. She was a leader in the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, serving as 14th International President from 1953-1958. Mrs. Wallace was a native of Knoxville.
