Abstract: John Christopher Burch was a prominent attorney in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He attended Yale University in 1847 and practiced law in his native state of Georgia before moving to Chattanooga in 1852. He served in the Tennessee state House and Senate in the late 1850s before becoming editor of the Nashville Union and American in 1859. He served as Secrectary of the U.S. Senate from 1879 until his death in 1881.
