Abstract: David Bell was born in 1797 in Wythe County, Virginia. He helped to establish Harrison as the county seat of Hamilton County, Tennessee in 1840. He was a successful merchant, trading in land, livestock and merchandise.

Abstract: Part of an exhibition, this item is labeled "mountain fiddle." There are only three tunning pegs, as opposed to the 4 found on a modern fiddle. This could be by design, or the forth peg might have fallen off. An animal head carving at the tip of the head of the fiddle is suggestive of a European influence.

Title: Cahill, John T., 1855-1889

Abstract: John Cahill was the child of Irish immigrants who moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee before the Civil War. After working in a foundry that closed in 1874, Cahill bought the bulk of the owner's designs at the age of nineteen and began his own foundry in the city.

Title: Davis Hall, the Orient and the Rotunda of The Athenaeum

Abstract: This photograph is titled, "Davis Hall, the Orient and the Rotunda of the Athenaeum". The Athenaeum operated from 1852 to 1903 and was a unique educational institution for women. The founder, Rev. Franklin Gillete Smith believed that female intellegence was equivalent to that of man. As a result of this, the school offered courses that were previously taught only to men. (physics, calculus,etc.) The schoolhad a sixteen thousand-volume library and a museum with six thousand specimens.

Abstract: Mrs. Augusta Osment lived here at the time this photograph was taken. The Italian villa home was originally built for P.M. Craigmiles in 1866 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Johnston family donated the home to the city to house the public library in 1923.
