The Athenaeum was a unique college for females which operated from 1852-1903. It was founded by Reverend Franklin Gillette Smith, who believed that female intelligence was equivalent to that of men, and his Athenaeum school offered courses such as physics, calculus, and marine biology normally taught only to male students.
