Civilians are often used in military kitchens alongside troops who perform "KP" or kitchen duty. KP may be used as a form of punishment for troops, but is often assigned out of necessity. The caption that Warren and Marcel worked in the Hotel may allude to the troops' stationing in hotels in France. Abandoned hotels were used as military housing and as functioning hospital units when necessary. The barracks were destroyed in the 1950s, but the crematory and guard towers of Buchenwald still stand.
