Abstract: An image of Nazi soldiers using French captives as slave labor in a field. It is unclear from the image if the captives were part of the Alsace region that was annexed by Germany during the war or if they were part of North and West France were was occupied by Germans from 1940-1944. During the occupation Germans used French citizens as a part of their labor force as prisoners of war.

Abstract: This photograph is of Camp Evan Shelby, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Bristol, Tennessee. In the photograph, uniformed C.C.C personnel stand at attention among the camp buildings. According to a note on the back of the photo, the date is approximately December, 1934. This photograph was donated by James H. Pickens.

Title: Busy Bee Cafe Owners, 3

Abstract: This photograph depicts Italian immigrant Concetta DiGiorgio Meshotto (Miciotto). She emigrated to New York in 1911 with her husband and children. The family lived in Chicago and Nashville before settling in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in 1916. Concetta opened the Busy Bee Cafe on the town square with her son Dominick and his wife Rose in 1926. Dominick and Rose Meshotto began running the cafe on their own in 1937 until they sold it in 1946.

Abstract: This is a photograph of a Little River Railroad lumber harvesting operation in progrss. Little River Railroad, a subsidiary of the Little River Lumber Company, which owned the land being havested, would lay a temporary railroad into an area to be forested. After removing all the trees worth logging, they would pull out and take the rail line up as they left, leaving very little behind.

Title: August 1945 - The Eagles Nest

Abstract: An image of a group touring The Eagles' Nest, or The Kehlsteinhaus, which was built as a 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler. Located near his home in Berchtesgaden, Germany, The Eagle's Nest was meant to be a retreat for Hitler and a place for him to entertain visiting dignitaries. Despite a rich interior including a fireplace of red marble presented by Mussolini, Hitler rarely visited the site. Although the 101st airborne division claimed to be the first to the site, other units including DWight D. Eisenhower's also claimed primacy. Photographs and newsreels showed troops relaxing on the patio and drinking wine in May 1945. The Eagles' Nest exists to this day; saved it from destruction by troops by Hitler's minimal association with the site.

Title: Ovens at Buchenwald Concentration Camp

Abstract: An image of the ovens at Buchenwald Concentration Camp. Buchenwald was opened in July, 1937 in Weimar, Germany and used by the Nazis primarily as a slave labor camp, although an extraordinary number of deaths occurred at the camp due to harsh conditions and human experimentation. 238,980 prisoners from thirty countries passed through Buchenwald and its satellite camps, of these 43,045 were killed before the camp was overtaken in April, 1945. Buchenwald was demolished in 1950, but the crematorium, hospital block and two towers remain.
