Gilmore was born into slavery under Captain Nathaniel Grant in the Bradley County area of Tennessee on March 29, 1856. Mrs. Tina (or Tena Gilmore began teaching in the African-American schools when black teachers began to replace white teachers in those schools. According to different local newspaper stories, Mrs. Gilmore was the youngest of seven or nine children born to Nathaniel and Caroline. She died on October 22, 1957 at the age of 101 years. French Moroccan soldiers were called goumiers, and were soldiers in auxiliary units to the French Army. Approximately 8,000 goumiers were killed during the war, and there was a great deal of controversy concerning some goumiers in Italy in 1944 in relation to their acts toward civilians. During the final months of the war goumiers assisted in efforts to take Stuttgart and Tubingen, Germany. By mid-1946, all gourmiers had been repatriated to Morocco.
