The students smile for the camera as their teacher, Leon Nance, looks on. Green School is named for Dr. Henry M. Green and was established in 1909 on Payne Avenue in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her major involvements were with the Mechanicsville Citizens for a Better Community, Solutions to Issues of Concern to Knoxvillians (SICK), the Mayor's Task Force for Revitalization of Mechanicsville, and the Knoxville Beautification Board. A native of Knoxville, Miss Delaney earned her bachelor's degree at Knoxville College and did graduate work at TSU, Columbia University and The University of Tennessee. Among the many honors she has received are the Mayor's Certificate of Appreciation for community service (1979), honorary membership in the TN House of Representatives (1984), the Golden Apple Award for Teachers (1986), and thhe Presidential Citation from the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (1986). Throughout her distinquished career, Ms. Delaney has been a community activist, and champition of equal opportunity in public and higher education.
