These men are in their physical training (P.T.) formation. Depicted left to right where recognizable are cadets Siville, Kissel, Randall, Rudzic, Kosinsky, Martin, Ethridge, Wisner, Whitler, Murphy, Burnett, Crawford, Chapman, and Freed.

Abstract: This is a photograph of the first library building (in Maryville?) (previously the library had occupied a floor in a downtown building). dedicated in February 1931. A new larger library was occupied in early 1981. The American Red Cross occupied the building until 2007 when they moved to larger quarters. in Maryville (300 E. Church St.) In the spring of 2007 a gift shop Dandy Lions opened at this location.

Title: Thomas Crews Betterton, 1867-1930

Abstract: Thomas C. Betterton was the son of a distiller, E.R. Betterton. He was born in Campbell County, Virginia. After his family moved, he attended Chattanooga schools and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1892. He was elected commissioner of the Departments of Fire and Police in the first such election held in Chattanooga and was the only commissioner of the first group to be reelected for a second term.

Abstract: This is the Camp Evan Shelby company photograph, C.C.C. Co. 1473, Tenn. F.-11 in Bristol, Tennessee. The group posed in front of the mess hall, and is one of a series of ten posed photos of C.C.C. personnel. The caption on the photograph identifies Carl H. Breitwieser as the "Capt. Eng. Res. C.O." The photo was printed at Ft. DesMoines, Iowa at the Post Exchange Studio. It was donated by James H. Pickens.

Title: Rhea County Courthouse

Abstract: 2 tifs. Two black and white photographs of the Rhea County Courthouse in Dayton, Tennessee. The Rhea County courthouse was constructed in 1890-1891 in the Romanesque Revival and Italian Villa style, with two large towers at either end of the building. The northeast tower is the clock tower with a central octagonal lantern below an open pavilion. The building was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1972, as it was the focal point of the Scopes Trial of the summer of 1925. William Jennings Bryan prosecuted the case for the state, alleging that Scopes violated a ban on teaching evolution in the classroom. Clarence Darrow unsuccessfully defended Scopes, who was charged with a fine of $100 at the conclusion of the trial.

Abstract: This photograph depicts a view of the public square looking west. Union Army encampment structures are surrounding the courthouse, which is situated on the left, unseen on the photograph. A stone and brick wall that surrounded the lawn is partially demolished; Union soldiers used the wall's materials to construct chimneys for their tents. An iron fence replaced the wall in 1870. The town well is visible to the right.
