Title: Postcard of William G. Brownlow and his home

Abstract: This tinted postcard presents William G. Brownlow's face against his home in Knoxville, TN. Brownlow, was known as "The Fighting Parson" because of his colorful speeches and writing as a preacher, in his paper, The Knoxville Whig, and in politics. During the post-War Reconstruction period, 1865-1869, he served as Governor of Tennessee. During the Civil War he was against secession, as were many people in east Tennessee.

Title: View from the courthouse cupola looking east

Abstract: This is a view from the courthouse cupola looking east down Main Street in Murfreesboro. On the left is the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, built in 1859. During the war, this church served as a hospital, barracks for Union troops, and prison for Confederate soldiers. On the right is the Christian Church. This church was used by various ministers for services during the war and therefore suffered little damage. The large building in the upper left is Union University, founded in 1848. During the war, this school served as a hospital and then as a refuge for former slaves.

Abstract: This photograph depicts typical living quarters of the 223rd Company C.C.C., TVA P-10 in Powell Station, Tennessee. Inside the wooden barracks, metal bunks are neatly arranged with heads and feet facing opposite directions. Wooden trunks lie at the end of each bed and laundry bags hang from the walls. Otto F. Haslbauer donated this photograph, which was printed by Spencer and Wyckoff of Detroit, Michigan.

Abstract: This photograph from the "Ratification Issue" of the Nashville Tennessean shows the Senate chamber at the moment that clerk counted the historic vote on women's suffrage. With this vote, Tennessee became the 36th and deciding state to approve the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote.

Title: Mr. John C. Burch, 1827-1881

Abstract: John Christopher Burch was a prominent attorney in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He attended Yale University in 1847 and practiced law in his native state of Georgia before moving to Chattanooga in 1852. He served in the Tennessee state House and Senate in the late 1850s before becoming editor of the Nashville Union and American in 1859. He served as Secrectary of the U.S. Senate from 1879 until his death in 1881.

Although the local population called it, "the Cove Creek Dam", it was named, "Norris Dam", after Nebraska Senator George Norris, who had been a strong supporter of TVA.
