Title: The Zimmerman family

Abstract: George Zimmerman stands with his wife and his children in front of their home in Englewood, Tennessee. There are seven children and the entire family is nicely dressed. The family is one of many who worked in the dozens of textile mills around Englewood, Tennessee in the first half of the 20th century. The quoted text below comes from the publication, Then and Now: The women of Englewood's textile mills. "Rental policies for company housing encouraged large families of mill workers. Front row (left to right: George, Jr. (prepared cotton for drawingframes), Clayton (doffboy, fixer), Lucille (sewer). Back row (left to right): George (forman in carding room), Marthan, Jessie, Bill (operated speeder) and Sallie (sewer).

Abstract: The Knoxville Gun Club poses with rifles in a field. The thirteen men are all well-dressed and standing: many wear ties and all of them wear hats. Some of the men have been identified on the back of the photo: 3 unidentified, Brewer, Keaton, Dr. Charles Boyd, 4 unidentified, Burke, Kennedy, and Glover, all well-known names in the local black community. There are at least five younger boys in the photograph. Two of them sit on the ground in front of the group, while the other three are either crouched or stand behind the group.

Abstract: This is a studio photograph of Jimmie Driver and his Tennessee Playboys, a C.C.C. camp band. A stamp on back of photo reads: The Rose Studio, Petersburg, VA. The band has three guitar players, one fiddle player, one banjo player, a harmonica player and a spoons player, each holding his instrument. The caption on the front of the photograph identifies Henry C. Mattingly as their announcer. It was donated by J. D. Driver.

In the second picture, the empty green football field appears in sharp contrast to the barren landscape behind it. Copper mining in the Ducktown-Copperhill area in Polk County began in the mid-1800s. By the earlier 20th century the area was environmentally devastated.

Abstract: 2 tifs. The first image depicts the roadside sign reading "Polk County Fair. FFA-4H Show Barn. Benton, TN. Aug. 13-18." The second image shows a long makeshift table supporting brightly colored vegetables and fruit. Behind the table are decorated panels separating booths. The fair took place at The Showbarn, on Highway 411, in Benton, Tennessee and had no admission fee. Special events included local musicians performances and livestock and crop displays and sales.
