The train was operated by the Department of Agriculture and the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway. The N.C.andSt.L. Railway president John W. Thomas, a native Tennessean and former farm boy, worked to help promote agriculture, including the "Agricultural Special" in cooperation with the Tennessee Dept of Agriculturea nd the UT Agricultural Extension Service. The different cars had different things; Car No 1: Farm Crop Car, 2. Fruits, Vegs and Apiary ; 3. Livestock ; 4. Health Car - with the Pure Food and Drugs Inspector ; 5. Education Car w/ Ag Supervisor of High Schools, 6. Domestic Science and Dairy ; 7. Platform car for livestock demonstrations and general lectures ; 8. Dining Car (Mrs. John W. Thomas) 9. Sleeping Car.
