Abstract: This is a photograph of mid-18th century Cherokee artifacts, animal bones, and plant food remains. It is from excavations of Overhill Cherokee Villages which were conducted by the University of Tennessee between 1967 and 1983 as part of the Tellico Archaeological Project. Excavations continued until 1983, and laboratory studies and report preparation continued until 1987. The excavations were conducted in anticipation of the flooding of the Lower Little Tennessee River Valley, in eastern Tennessee, by the Tellico Dam Reservoir. The excavations were conducted under contract with the National Park Service and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).

Abstract: This aerial photograph shows the former site of Chota and Tanasee, 18th century Overhill Cherokee villages in the Little Tennessee River Valley. Chota was recognized by Native Americans and European settlers as a powerful social and economic influence and was regarded as the capital of the Cherokee nation. The University of Tennessee conducted excavations of Overhill Cherokee villages between 1967 and 1983 as part of the Tellico Archaeological Project in anticipation of the flooding of the lower Little Tennessee River Valley by the Tellico Dam Reservoir. Title: Alcoa`s Hydroelectric Developments in the Smoky Mountains

Abstract: From the first page of the pamphlet: "This pamphlet was prepared for publication as a part of a tour souvenir book in conjunction with the Sixth International Congress on Large Dams held September 16-19, 1958 in New York City. The Committee sponsored several `study tours` after the conclusion of the New York Congress. One of these tours was through the Southeastern United States and included inspection of certain of Alcoa`s hydroelectric developments as well as the hydroelectric developments of others." This pamphlet contains only the Alcoa portion of the souvenir book and "was prepared for distribution to members of the study tour, other visitors to Alcoa`s hydroelectric plants, and interested company personnel." The pamphlet was first published in February of 1958, reprinted in November 1958, and revised in January of 1973. 3 pages of 31.

Abstract: This resource unit prepared by the Nashville City Schools in 1959 provides a fascinating glimpse into scientific thinking at the beginning of the Space Age. There are line drawings of the Vanguard, Sputnik, Atlas and Explorer satellites. There is a discussion of the effect of the launch of Sputnik on the the world, especially in the United States with regard to education, research and development into space exploration. The unit has a drawing about animals launched into space, contains a glossary of terms and a list of resources such as books and magazine articles for teachers. It also includes a list of the Social Studies Steering Committee and the teachers who had used the unit on an experimental basis.
