Abstract: Due to the large number of male students involved in World War II, men's athletic teams were discontinued from 1942 through 1945. Rivalries developed between student teams and the military teams temporarily residing on campus.

Title: Varsity Football Team, 1934

Abstract: Charles Gene Sarver, a guard on this team, won five dollars in a contest naming the team the "Raiders" after the Colgate Red Raiders. Since State Teachers College team colors were blue and white, the local teams became the "Blue Raiders." According to Sarver, President Q.M. Smith and Public Relations director, Gene Sloan, decided to add a mascot dressed as one of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest's "raiders."

Abstract: This collection consists of one 8x10 black-and-white photograph of members of the Rugby Colony in Morgan County, Tennessee, participating in a summer outing. The Rugby Colony was founded by English author and social reformer Thomas Hughes and was officially christened on October 5, 1880. The colony dissolved in the early 1890's due to a number of obstacles they had faced in preceding years.

Abstract: This photograph is titled, "Black trainer Nathaniel Stokes Won with Famed Strolling Jim", Strolling Jim was the first champion Tn Walking horse, Wartrace trainer Floyd Caruthers rode him to the championship in Shelbyville's first Tennessee Walking Horse Nat'l. Celebration. Strolling Jim also won in the circling the ring in the groom's division under the direction of Shelbyville groom Nathaniel Stokes. In addition to the blue ribbon, he won a box of cigars and a $5 check.

She was lauded as the "World's Fastest Woman" after her performance in the inaugural Pan-American Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1951. Patton won the gold medals for the 200 meters and the 4x100 meter relay, and a silver in the 100 meters.

Title: The South Holston Dam in Tennessee

Abstract: The first two photographs in this series are of the South Holston Dam while under construction. The third photograph features the reservoir created after the dam was built. The South Holston Reservoir is on the South Fork Holston River in northeast Tennessee and extends 24 miles into Virginia. The Tennessee Valley Authority began construction on the dam in 1942 and finished construction in 1950.
