Since State Teachers College team colors were blue and white, the local teams became the "Blue Raiders." According to Sarver, President Q.M. Smith and Public Relations director, Gene Sloan, decided to add a mascot dressed as one of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest's "raiders."
