The Chester Inn was built in 1797 by Dr. William P. Chester, a native of York County, Pennsylvania, who became a prominent physician in Jonesborough, Tennessee. The Chester Inn is the oldest commercial building in Jonesborough. At the time this picture was taken the building was known as the Jonesboro Inn. It is now a state historic site. Mr Johnson was born a slave in 1844 and eventually became very succesful financially. He made money in real estate, saloon ownership, and owning race horses. He donated money to build a fountain in a city park that Knoxville hand named in his honor in 1922. Title: Invitation to the Memphis Commercial Convention in Memphis, Tennessee on May 18, 1869 Signer : W L Trask Recipient : Robert I Chester Date Created: 1869-03 Abstract: This invitation to the Memphis Commercial Convention is addressed to Mr. Robert I. Chester of Jackson, Tennessee. This convention followed one the previous October in Norfolk, Virginia. One of its purposes was to secure the "cordial and active co-operation" of people in the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys to build trade with Europe, in a spirit of "generous rivalry" with the North-Atlantic Cities. Another purpose was to discuss the necessity of a railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean over a route that was unobstructed all year. Additional topics were the leveeing of the Mississippi river and immigration. Included with this invitation are suggestions for how many delegates different entities should send and Robert Chester`s delegate badge.
