Abstract: Prominent Knoxville citizens such as Thomas W. Humes, Episcopal clergyman and later president of the University of Tennessee, E. J. Sanford, owner of a drug firm, and W.C. Kyle are among the petitioners who ask Governor Brownlow for a proclamation to protect those who sympathized with the "late Rebellion." According to the petition, rebels who return under the parole agreed at the end of the war have been greeted by violence and threats. The petitioners worry of impending lawlessness if the situation is allowed to continue. They ask the governor to issue a proclamation instructing those with grievances against the former rebels to use peaceful and legal means through the courts. The petition has more than two pages of signatures. Governor Brownlow issued the requested proclamation on May 29, 1865.

Abstract: This is a drawing of the Tellico Blockhouse. The Tellico Blockhouse was constructed in 1794-95 adjacent to the earlier Fort Loudoun at the confluence of the Tellico and Little Tennessee Rivers in what is presently Monroe County as a federal outpost. In 1805 federal officials and Overhill Cherokees negotiated a treaty at the Tellico Blockhouse which moved the federal agency south to the mouth of the Hiawassee. By 1807 the federal government abandoned Tellico and moved the rest of its agency to the Hiawassee River post, the new center of the Overhill Cherokee settlement. Excavations of the Tellico Blockhouse were conducted by the University of Tennessee from 1972-1974 in anticipation of the flooding of the lower Little Tennessee River by the Tellico Dam Reservoir. Excavations of the Blockhouse were conducted under contract with the National Park Service and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Principal investigator, Alfred K. Guthe. Field Director, Richard R. Polhemus.

Abstract: This is a small poster that is the cover of History of Americans Over the Top, Victory Edition. The illustration shows American soldiers going "over the top" of a trench during a battle and capturing German soldiers. Airplanes fly overhead. The poster was printed by Columbian Eng. Co. in Chicago. An advertisment on the back of the poster describes a volume that will be an "authentic narrative" of World War I, including real military maps and other illustrations. Orders are to be sent to the Southern Agriculturist, Nashville, Tennessee.

Abstract: This is a print of a drawn portrait of Colonel Isaac Shelby. Shelby was born in 1750 and died in 1826. He participated in the Battle of King's Mountain during the American Revolutionary war among other events in the war. He was one of the first founders of what would become Bristol, Tennessee. Shelby followed his military success with accomplishments in entrepreneurship and politics.
