Title: Two dead SS troops at Buchenwald Camp Photographer : unknown Date Created: 1945-04-20 Abstract: An image of two dead SS troops at Buchenwald concentration camp. Buchenwald concentration camp was opened in July, 1937 in Weimar, Germany and used by the Nazis primarily as a slave labor camp, although an extraordinary number of deaths occurred at the camp due to harsh conditions and human experimentation. Buchenwald had three parts with a "tent camp" set up for Polish prisoners in 1939. 238,980 prisoners from thirty countries passed through Buchenwald and its satellite camps, of these 43,045 were killed. The camp was especially linked to the execution of Soviet prisoners of war, and at least 1,000 soviets were killed in the years 1941-1942. Nazi doctors used prisoners as test subjects for vaccines and killed hundreds as a result. In all over 30,000 were killed before the camp was overtaken in April of 1945. Around 200 women were held in Buchenwald, and the camp was used to incarcerate Allied POWs. The author Elie Wiesel was held at Buchenwald as well. Despite the atrocities by guards, an underground resistance developed and saved the lives of some sentenced to death within the camp's ranks. After the war Buchenwald was used to house German war criminals and used by the Soviet Union, who killed from 10,000-20,000 from 1945-1950. The camp was demolished in 1950, but the crematorium, hospital block and two towers remain. Title: Ruins of Hitler's home, the Berghof Photographer : unknown Date Created: 1945-08 Abstract: An image of Hitler's home, the Berghof, as it stood in partial ruins after World War II. The Berghof, located in the Alps of Berchtesgaden, Germany, was Hitler's primary residence during World War II, and was used as one of the Headquarters for the Nazi movement. The house itself was developed from an earlier summer home, and built using the profits from the publication of "Mein Kampf." Berchtesgaden was purchased by the Nazis in the 1920s for their senior officers, and served as an outpost for the German Reichskanzlei office. The mountains were home to Nazi leaders and the area included a station, postoffice and the Berchtesgadener Hof Hotel. Most of the buildings in Berchtesgaden were destroyed immediately after the war. Title: 508 M.P.'s in Vipiteno, Italy Photographer : unknown Date Created: 1945-09-16 Abstract: The 508 M.P. began duty in Munich in July, 1945 and divided the city into three sectors to control a large number of displaced people and their camps. In August of 1945 the troop was relieved of their duty to direct traffic, but maintained a presence in the city to control crime. The 508 deactivated in 1964, after service in Munich including escorting Eisenhower through the city in 1946. Vipiteno, Italy was a small town located just south of the German/Italian border. The city's railroad bridge was heavily bombed in 1945 because the city was the main link between Germany and Italy during the war. Many inhabitants of the city speak German, and the city may also be known as Sterzing, Italy. The image shows the Italian basilica The Torre delle Dodici in the background, with the 508 M.P. troops roaming the streets. Title: American Red Cross Clubmobile Photographer : unknown Date Created: 1939 - 1945 Abstract: A black and white photograph of a Red Cross Clubmobile, the "El Paso," in the Argonne Forrest, France. In World War II the American Red Cross collaborated with the U.S. Armed Forces to provide entertainment for the troops. In 1944, in preparation for the invasion of Normandy, 32 two-and-a-half-ton GMC trucks were converted into Clubmobiles with kitchens and lodging for their crew. Clubmobiles were mobile entertainment, and served troops coffee and doughnuts, distributed cigarettes and played albums. They were each staffed by three American women who received their orders from the Army. Clubmobiles were given names of states and cities in the United States, hence the "El Paso" pictured here. They served troops in England, France, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, until May 7, 1945.
