Title: Hospital at the Buchenwald Camp Photographer : unknown Date Created: 1945 Abstract: A photograph of the Buchenwald Concentration camp hospital with visitors sitting on the lawn and touring the facility. One doctor in a white coat stands at the top of the stairs, watching the scene. The camp at this time had been evacuated by the Nazis prior to American invasion in April, 1945. After the war Buchenwald was used to house German war criminals and used by the Soviet Union, who killed as many as 10,000-20,000 from 1945-1950. The camp was demolished in 1950, but the crematorium, hospital block and two towers remain. Civilians are often used in military kitchens alongside troops who perform "KP" or kitchen duty. KP may be used as a form of punishment for troops, but is often assigned out of necessity. The caption that Warren and Marcel worked in the Hotel may allude to the troops' stationing in hotels in France. Abandoned hotels were used as military housing and as functioning hospital units when necessary. The barracks were destroyed in the 1950s, but the crematory and guard towers of Buchenwald still stand. Nazis caused the death of 43,045 of the 238,980 prisoners from thirty countries who passed through Buchenwald. The camp was primarily used for slave labor, however, many prisoners were executed and hundreds died as a result of medical experiments. Title: Goering's Home, Berchtesgaden, Germany Photographer : unknown Date Created: 1945-08 Abstract: An image of the home of Hermann Goring after the Allied troops began destroying Nazi party members' homes in Berchtesgaden, Germany. Goring was the second in command of the Third Reich, and captured by American troops on May 9, 1945. Goring was sentenced to execution at the Nuremberg Trials, but took his own life the night prior to his hanging. Berchtesgaden was purchased by the Nazis in the 1920s for their senior officers, and served as an outpost for the German Reichskanzlei office. The mountains were home to Nazi leaders and the area included a station, postoffice and the Berchtesgadener Hof Hotel. Most of the buildings in Berchtesgaden were destroyed immediately after the war.
