Title: August 1945 - The Eagles Nest Photographer : unknown Date Created: 1945-08 Abstract: An image of a group touring The Eagles' Nest, or The Kehlsteinhaus, which was built as a 50th birthday present for Adolf Hitler. Located near his home in Berchtesgaden, Germany, The Eagle's Nest was meant to be a retreat for Hitler and a place for him to entertain visiting dignitaries. Despite a rich interior including a fireplace of red marble presented by Mussolini, Hitler rarely visited the site. Although the 101st airborne division claimed to be the first to the site, other units including DWight D. Eisenhower's also claimed primacy. Photographs and newsreels showed troops relaxing on the patio and drinking wine in May 1945. The Eagles' Nest exists to this day; saved it from destruction by troops by Hitler's minimal association with the site.
