Title: Tax Sale Certificates and Writ of Possession of Jeremiah Vansciver of Memphis, TN Creator : United States Direct Tax Commissioners Date Created: 1864-06-16 - 1865-06-16 Abstract: Jeremiah Vansciver bought Memphis property in 1864 that was sold for unpaid taxes according to "An Act for the Collection of Direct Taxes in Insurrectionary Districts in the United States." On June 16, 1864 he purchased two lots on Block 40 for 40 dollars that had been assessed to Scruggs & Wicker & Shaw in 1860. On June 18, 1864, he bought part of Block 15 on Shelby Street that had been assessed to Horton, Estis & Co. in 1860 for eighty-five dollars. The paperwork also contains a Writ of Possession, dated June 16, 1865, for part of Block 15 on Echols Street, apparently contested by M. J. H. Roper. There is also a notice dated October 26, 1864 that one of his purchases, Tax Sale Certificate No. 46, had been redeemed according to law, and that his purchase money and interest would be returned to him upon his surrender of that certificate. An official business envelope of the U.S. Direct Tax Commission, District of Tennessee to Jeremiah Vansciver, Esq. of Memphis, Tennessee accompanies the paperwork. Bill. To meet emergency housing needs, in 1946 Congress appropriated $78 million to move buildings from military bases to college campuses. MTSC also received federal funds to erect small apartments for married veterans and their wives and children. Vet Village, as this area of campus was known, had its own laundry house, student-run grocery store, mayor, and representative on the Associated Student Body.
