The firewagon and horses were in the lower right of the the building. Located on West 1st North, it was replaced by a new City Hall in 1931 which was replaced by the City Center.

Abstract: This photograph shows a child seated in front of the Travellers Rest. The building has the front facade with Victorian porch, which was present from 1885 to 1920. The child is prossibly a member of the Thompson family from Glen Leven plantation, neighbors of the Overtons. He was possibly visiting during a diptheria outbreak while their home was being disinfected.

Abstract: 2 tifs. Two black and white photographs of the Rhea County Courthouse in Dayton, Tennessee. The Rhea County courthouse was constructed in 1890-1891 in the Romanesque Revival and Italian Villa style, with two large towers at either end of the building. The northeast tower is the clock tower with a central octagonal lantern below an open pavilion. The building was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1972, as it was the focal point of the Scopes Trial of the summer of 1925. William Jennings Bryan prosecuted the case for the state, alleging that Scopes violated a ban on teaching evolution in the classroom. Clarence Darrow unsuccessfully defended Scopes, who was charged with a fine of $100 at the conclusion of the trial.

Abstract: This photograph is titled, "Davis Hall, the Orient and the Rotunda of the Athenaeum". The Athenaeum operated from 1852 to 1903 and was a unique educational institution for women. The founder, Rev. Franklin Gillete Smith believed that female intellegence was equivalent to that of man. As a result of this, the school offered courses that were previously taught only to men. (physics, calculus,etc.) The schoolhad a sixteen thousand-volume library and a museum with six thousand specimens.
