The Athenaeum operated from 1852 to 1903 and was a unique educational institution for women. The founder, Rev. Franklin Gillete Smith believed that female intellegence was equivalent to that of man. As a result of this, the school offered courses that were previously taught only to men. (physics, calculus,etc.) The schoolhad a sixteen thousand-volume library and a museum with six thousand specimens.
