Title: Beginnings of the Space Age: A Resource Unit for the Tenth Grade

Abstract: This resource unit prepared by the Nashville City Schools in 1959 provides a fascinating glimpse into scientific thinking at the beginning of the Space Age. There are line drawings of the Vanguard, Sputnik, Atlas and Explorer satellites. There is a discussion of the effect of the launch of Sputnik on the the world, especially in the United States with regard to education, research and development into space exploration. The unit has a drawing about animals launched into space, contains a glossary of terms and a list of resources such as books and magazine articles for teachers. It also includes a list of the Social Studies Steering Committee and the teachers who had used the unit on an experimental basis.

Title: Blue Raider Basketball Finds Fame

Abstract: As Ohio Valley Conference champions in 1989, MTSU upset Florida State in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament. MTSU had made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history in 1982. The Blue Raiders then played the heavily favored Kentucky Wildcats, who were making their 27th appearance in the tournament. But the Blue Raiders defeated the Wildcats 50-44 in one of the most memorable games in school history.

Mrs. Edd Royal made this dress... udining table... in the center of a cut glass mirror with a vace on a lace cloth. It was very beautiful. Note the spelling on the words bloomes [blooms], negligee [negligee]and vace [vase]. The Lord is my Shepherd and I am the Truth and life is also written on the back of this photograph.

Title: Classes of Maryville Polytechnic School in Maryville, Tennessee

Abstract: 3 tifs. Two images of classes of Maryville Polytechnic School. The first image is of the primary school students, and the second is of all the girls in the school from elementary through high school. The Maryville school system was established in 1900, with schools constructed in 1911. The Maryville Polytechnic school operated out of the Freedman's institute, and the building was demolished in 1938. The students are dressed in school uniforms consisting of white shirts, ties and plaid pants or skirts. The verso of the image reads "Girls of Maryville Polytechnic School -- Elementary through High School. Headed by Prof. and Mrs. Charles William Henry/ Martha Henry daughter/ 3rd row, 3rd from right edge/ YW@a 7 1/2 x 2 1/2/ 133 cap/ 767."

Abstract: "The Dromgooles and Claxtons gave their usual joint program at the first meeting of the Fall Term. Addresses of welcome were delivered by the presidents of both Societies. The program consisted of readings, dialogues, musical numbers, and contests followed by refreshments and social hour. A large crowd was present and all sitting and standing room was taken" (The Normalite, October 1922).

Title: Cope Administration Building

Abstract: Cope Administration Building, named for University President Quill E. Cope, opened in 1965. Cope continued President Quintin Miller Smith's building program and carried the college to university status. The fourth president also continued fiscal policies that provided a sound basis for growth. President Cope initiated a campus beautification program and oversaw the construction of twenty-three new buildings, including the Keathley University Center, Ellington Human Sciences Building, Saunders Fine Arts, and many new dormitories.
