Jackson 4th Feb [February] 1850 Dear Father
your favour [favor] of 17th ult [ultimo] was receved [received] last night and in reply as to Randolph I would say that the best thing that can be done for him is to send him off, to seek his own fortune upon his own exertions, tell him to go to work, learn a trade or whatever else he may desire, that he need not expect any further aid from any quarter, other than his own exertion It is useless to thow [throw] pearls before swine, I would say to Mr. L[gap] that I regret he has given himself and family [gap] much trouble about him especially as he [gap] proved [gap] nworthy of the pains that [gap] taken with him I hope he will [gap] off immedialety [immediately] to rely upon his [gap] I had a conversation [gap] Mrs McGehee on the subject of the money [gap] Mr Love , it was then understood that along in January a draft would be sent to Mr Love , but I do not know whether or not it has been done, I have written to Mr McGehee ( as he is not at home) on the subject

I shall see them pretty soon now and if the draft has not been sent I will endeavour to have it done We are progressing slowly in Legislature business in which the country at large is interested we have passed a [unclear: civil ] law for Bolivar County , and hope to get some aid from the state by way of taxes on his landed interest for all the Counties where [unclear: Laws ] are necessary, we have a great many more friends for that scheme and the improvement of the navigation of our rivers than we had two years ago I met with Mr Murdock here who informs me that sister nancy had sold some 6 or 8 negros, and hired out the ballance untill [balance until] fall when she expects to move to texas , she is living near Black Hawk in Carroll County for the present, I do not know whether Joseph is gone to texas or not I had a letter from William a few days since saying the [gap] River was rising very fast , and [gap] it would get up before all the [gap] ould be finished, but they could [gap] what was done all will when I [gap] from home yours [gap]uly James Brown
