Know all men by these presents that I Benjamin Powell of Burke County and State of North Carolina for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred dollars to me in hand paid by William B. Lenoir of Roane County and State of Tennessee (the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged) have bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain and sell and convey unto the said William B. Lenoir all my right title interest and claim, and also all right title interest and claim that Peter Cardwell hath or ever had in consequence of his intermarriage with Elizabeth Harris to the following named negroes to wit, Wilson, Isom & Joshua which negroes are now in posession [possession] of the said William B Lenoir, and are the children of a negro woman named Betty who was lent to Fathe Harris [added: by her grandfather John Hobbs] during her natural life and after her death she and her increase was to be equally divided among all her children And I do hereby warrant and defend the said negroes Wilson Isom and Joshua to the said William B. Lenoir his heirs and assigns free and clear from any incumbrance and claim that I have acquired to said negroes in consequence of my intermarriage with Nancy Harris daughter of said Fath Harris and also from all incumbrances and claims of Peter Cardwell and from all and every of our heirs or assigns.
