State of Tennessee Knoxville Sept. [September] 25th 1796
Honbl. [Honorable] Sir,

By the admission of the State of Tennessee into the Federal Government, the appointment of a District Judge will be found necessary; I will gratefully accept of the appointment. Perhaps you recognize me. I have had the honour [honor] of a small acquaintance with you.
