State of Tennessee ,

KNOW YE, THAT reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, conduct and fidelity of [added: Joseph Brown ] of the county of [added: Maury] we do commission him [added: Lieutenant Colonel Commandant of the 27th] regiment of militia of this state; and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfil the duties of [added: Colonel of] the said regiment, agreeable to law, a n d the rules and directions of military discipline To Have and to Hold the rank and command of [added: Colonel of] the said regiment, during good behavior with all the powers, privileges and emoluments there- [gap] appertaining.

[gap] said [added: Joseph Brown] is hereby required [gap] superior officers' lawful commands; and all officers and pri- [gap] his command, are to be obedient to him as aforesaid.
